lamb b

By Anthony Hart

In the Summer of 1994 nineteen baby-faced boys, garters restricting bloodflow, breeches itching and sown-in name-tags prominent joined CH from all corners of the country. One even swapped the Culinary delights of Italy for the culinary delights of Dining Hall. The first weeks went by in a blur. Nick Bethell spent every available minute in the queue for the phone, Jez went out with Amy and gave us all the thumbs up seal of approval, before dumping her. We all made enough toast for the LE to feed a third world country twice, although the occasional spread of green slime to accompany it made "bockering" more bearable. We all learnt to March although Luca never got the hang.

It didn't take long to work out was who. Andy and Johnny were impossible to distract from their work. Walter amused us all with tales of his castle, and Aorja introduced us to some foods that I didn't know existed. Willie Milner looked lost, muttered strange comments to himself and got high on coca-cola and sugar. Tim smoked Bovril.

Cup-Ties, whatever the sport brought out the best in everyone. Although we had our fair share of success I can't remember many occasions where we didn't all pull together and give 100%. We had some excellent sportsmen, Ben Alozie in particular whose pace, strength and competitive spirit meant that we were all glad to be on his side.

The Third Form was soon upon us, and once we got over the initial excitement of turning our girdles around realised that apart from being relieved from toast-making duty, life wasn't really much different. Anthony, Ben C-L and Homan grew incredibly tall, while Ed didn't. Bruce had since arrived and soon became everyone's favourite stressball/staple-gun target. Luca went in search of "Res-Points" and if setting off the fire-alarms and smoking in dorms wasn't enough, he bought a mouse and put it through Miss Simmonds letterbox.Anthony, Ben A and Aorja started a band but really shouldn't have. Tim discovered The Prodigy and Willie lost his breath, Homan discovered anti-dandruff shampoo and Jeremy got a very uncomfortable infection.

The LE was what we had all been waiting for. The shackles had been released and with our promises of maturity and co-operation with Mckenna were signed and sealed. The New Microwave was immediately subjected to exploding fish and maggots while the once-distant lure of toast had materialised.Detentions and cards became commonplace with Luca, Ben and Anthony defying belief at times. Broadies took months to arrive and when they finally did half of us lost them. Carl Dried banana skins, Aorja got involved with syringes, Jonny broke his Arm while skating down a mole-hill and Homan Ed and Anthony Dissed each other non-stop. Anthony and Jeremy arranged a golf tournament and got red card for going to Horsham to buy a trophy. Jeremy didn't even make the cut!

When all is said and done I think that anyone will say that Lamb B was the best Junior House on the avenue. Whilst Maine and Peele each had a seriously suspect Housemaster; Mr Mckenna, despite problems with pronunciations was a genuine guy who had our best interests at heart. I wish the Same could be said about the rest of the house staff. Everyone except Guy hated Miss "Dragon" Simmonds (as the day-room celebration at the news of her car accident will testify) She was the Queen of Confiscation and the Don of Detention. Like Anne Robinson. But worse.

Mr "good morning it's seven o'clock" Howard banned "Ricky, Rocker, Rocky" and every other variation and talked to himself regularly. He also came up with a elaborate morning roll-call system that included 2 minutes injury time. but no-one understood it. Mongie "would you get into bed" Torkington would open the curtains with a corner flag and spit lots. Other House staff included Mr "kelp" Hebb, Rob Nevins, Mr "Gripper" Sutcliffe and probably more.

All too soon Lamb B came to an end and with it an era concluded too. Every single member of the '94 Lamb B second form was an absolute diamond geezer and I wish all every success in the future, and to watch out for news of reunions etc. in the future.
